Finding the Beaches of Culebra
"HIDE AND SEEK" is the most exiting game you can play in Culebra Island and discovering all the beaches with your family is such a thrilling adventure. With around 10 beaches, 8 lagoons, and 24 cays, among other attractions, Culebra is undoubtedly one of the most colorful town of Puerto Rico. Our mission in Culebra was to visit as many beaches as possible in only three days. Of course we did not discover all of them, but the moment we discovered one, we wanted to stay there all day because every one of them has something special.
There are several ways to travel to the island of Culebra and we choose the Cargo Ferry which leaves dock at 2am. That was a big mistake! The only benefit was that now I can at least visualize what the Spanish conquistadors experienced in their travels across the Atlantic Ocean. But the moment you step on the island of Culebra you forget about everything bad... sort of like the experience of giving birth.
To move around the island, I recommend renting golf carts or Jeep since there will be some uncomfortable roads, especially for a van. You must keep in mind that the commerce in Culebra, like all small towns, has their own rules. Stores might open later that a typical store in a city, and night clubs can close as early as 10pm.
People are not lying when they describe Flamenco Beach as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand is white and soft, the waters are serene, and time flies by because you fall into a relaxing trance, just by observing the beauty around you.
Tamarindo Beach is unique and all along its coast it really has tamarindo trees full of that sweet and sour legume, which I only like as syrup on ice cones. It was the first time I visit a rocky beach and for my daughters it was fun collecting rocks of different shapes and colors. Later we made a short visit to Zoni Beach and Tortuga Beach, which is nesting area for turtles. We walked along the coast and discovered an abandoned campsite full of large snail. All these beaches have a lot of good wind, excellent for water sports.
When you are on your way to finding beaches, it's normal to make short stops to take pictures since you will discover so many spectacular views across the island. Brava Beach, Larga Beach, Las Vacas Beach, Soldado Beach, Luis Peña Beach, and Resaca Beach are some of the beaches of Culebra.
You must also take morning to explore the town, full of vibrant colors, gift shops, bakeries and restaurants. In our visit we went to a small shop that makes homemade ice-cream sandwiches so big, that my daughters could not easily take a bite. That day at sunset, we could not leave without trying the delicious Arepas of Culebra, a kind of fried bread made with wheat flours.
The island is really one of the best places to disconnect from daily routine. It's a place where time stops and where three short days, felt like one whole week. So of course, I want to go back to Culebra.
